Hyperbolic paraboloid roof3/9/2024 The canopy to the former petrol filling station, constructed in 1960-61 to designs by architect Hugh Segar (Sam) Scorer and structural engineer Dr Hajnal-Kónyi, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons: Scorer’s petrol station truly reflected that new optimism following the post-war years and the Trust is delighted to celebrate this survivor of a period now sadly often neglected. Britain’s first motorway, the Preston bypass, had opened in 1958 whilst the first part of the M1 opened in 1959. The National Transport Trust decided this highly visible and unusual structure was worthy of a Red Wheel, reflecting as it does the new dynamism of the 1960’s and the enthusiasm for all things ‘road’.
